June 18 - 22

It hard to believe that summer vacation is almost here. The students were very busy this week wrapping up projects and completing curricular units. But of course there was time set aside to have some fun!

National Indigenous People Day

On June 21s, we were so fortunate to have a drumming and singing presentation by students from Ben Calf Robe school in Edmonton to help us celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day! The students and staff were able to participate in a large round dance.

Curricular Update

Language Arts

During Writer's Workshop this week the students worked on page for their memory album listing their "Top 10 Favourite Memories" of the year.

They also continued to illustrate the pages of their Fractured Fairy Tales. The students are so proud of their stories and they can't wait to share them with you.

The students were asked to complete a "This is Me" page to be given to their Grade 4 teacher.

Math

This week the students completed the Measurement unit by focusing on Mass.  compare masses of objects by using a balance. use a scale to measure the mass of objects in grams and kilograms.

They also completed the Data Anlysis unit this week.  This unit is project based where the students planned their year end party by analyzing and charting the data taken from each other. The students collected first-hand data regarding preferred snacks and drinks for the party.  Using the data collected they organized it using tally arks, line plots and bar graphs.

The four questions they will be collecting data to answer are:
1.  What type of chips would you like for the party?
2. What kind of drink would you like for the party?
3. What type of candy would you like for the party?
4. What kind of popcorn topping would you like on your popcorn?

The top choices were salt n' vinegar chips, cream soda floats, cotton candy and caramel popcorn.

The students also focused on geometry this week where they described 3D objects by identifying the number of sides, vertices and edges of the sphere, cone, cylinder, pyramid and rectangular prisms.

Social Studies

The students finished their study of Peru this week by focusing on history, nature, government and economy. On Friday the students finished painting their Peruvian masks. They also enjoyed a bit of Peruvian food such as oranges, mangoes, bananas, banana chips, Inca Cola, chocolate and brownies.

The students were super excited to bring their sunflower plants home.

There was also some time to have some fun in the sun to celebrate "Summer Solstice."
