We had a very busy week in 3A. Thank you so much to those of you who were able to attend parent teacher meetings on Tuesday night. It was great to meet with all of you. If your child took their goal sheet home, please be sure to send it back to school as soon as possible. Your support with your child's academic goal setting and learning is greatly appreciated.
RBES was so lucky to have an exciting Earth Rangers presentation this week. Earth Rangers is a kids’ conservation organization, committed to instilling environmental knowledge, positivity, and the confidence in children to take action. The presentation was to educate our students that it’s not too late to help the planet, and the things we do today will matter tomorrow.
Our Earth Rangers school assembly was specifically focused on climate change, its impact on both people and animals and what we can do to help mitigate it. Throughout the school assembly the students were introduced to four Earth Rangers Animal Ambassadors, including animals like Draco the Caiman Lizard, Quillow the Prehensile-tailed Porcupine and Sonny the Harris Hawk, who demonstrated their amazing natural behaviours and helped explain how important climate is to their survival. The assembly also explored the role that climate can have on ectotherm organisms such as reptiles, the impact that changes in weather patterns can have on migratory birds and how vital healthy forests are to animals.
The presentation looked at how Climate Change is impacting northern Indigenous communities and the actions that these communities are taking to help stop climate change. The presentation hopefully inspired our students by highlighting the real-life work conservationists are doing across Canada and showed them how they too can take action for a cause they care about.

Our students were given information on how to become an Earth Ranger and to make a commitment to engage in actions that directly contribute to the protection of wildlife.
October 24th was Take Me Outside Day. Take Me Outside Day is a reminder to do just that. We were encouraged to extend the classroom beyond the four walls and get outside for at least an hour.

The students had a great time just enjoying the fresh air and spending time outside at the end of the day.
Star Student
We had a lot of fun celebrating our star student this week!

Reading Workshop
Freckle Juice
This week we started our Novel Study of Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. Freckle Juice is a story about a boy who wanted freckles so his mom wouldn't notice that his neck was dirty. If she doesn't know it's dirty, he won't have to wash it. Sounds about right. Some boys will do whatever it takes not have to a bath!

For each chapter we will complete various "reading responses" to apply specific vocabulary and comprehension skills to the book.
At the beginning of every chapter the students are introduced to specific vocabulary words to watch out for while reading.
The students were asked to write two sentences about the setting after reading chapter one.
The students also enjoyed the visualization activity where they wrote one sentence and illustrated a mental image made while reading chapter two.
Amazing Race
Congratulations to our amazing readers this week who flew to their next destination.
Writing Workshop
The students continued to work on their "I Need My Monster" descriptive writing piece. Once they were edited, the students wrote good copies of their paragraphs. The student's monster illustrations and descriptive paragraphs are now on display in our classroom.
Word Study
The focus for our word study this week was the short /i/ pattern. The students completed a various activities, such as crosswords, fill in the blank and draw the meaning, to reinforce this pattern.
Math
This week we focused on:
- using base ten blocks to compare pairs of one-, two-, and three-digit numbers and determine which number is greater.
- representing numbers on a number line.
- comparing pairs of one-, two-, and three-digit numbers using place value to determine which number is greater.
- using words and symbols to compare numbers (<, >, =).
- writing the greatest and least possible numbers from given digits.
The students worked on plus 7 this week for their mad minutes.
Social Studies
The students mapping assignments were due on Monday. The assignment required your child to create a map of their favourite place to live. The students worked very hard on their projects and turned in very creative, well thought-out maps. I mean, who wouldn't want to live in Zooville or at the Lego Village? Great job everyone!
This week our focus in social studies was on learning about the 7 continents and the 4 oceans on earth. We spent some time specifically focusing on North America. As well, the students worked on the chromebooks to fill in their map of Canada by identifying all of the provinces and territories.
Art
The students loved following along with an online video to draw a haunted house in art class this week. The website is called Art for Kids Hub. There are many great videos on how to draw, paint, fold and sculpt many cool things! Please click on the following link to check it out at home.
The students also made jack-o-lanterns and spiral ghosts to decorate the classroom for our party.
Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
