I can't believe that we are halfway through November already. The time is just flying by. We are busy with our regular classroom activities, while preparing for the upcoming Christmas concert at the same time. So much to do!
Student of the Week
Congratulations to our Student of the Week! Thank you for being a great role model for your peers!

Reading Workshop
This week during Reading Workshop we focused on story mapping. Completing a story map after instruction encourages students to make connections between prior knowledge, what was learned, and to identify the sequencing of important events or information.

Reading Workshop
This week during Reading Workshop we focused on story mapping. Completing a story map after instruction encourages students to make connections between prior knowledge, what was learned, and to identify the sequencing of important events or information.
One of the stories I read to model story mapping was "A Bad Case of the Stripes" by David Shannon. Camilla Cream loves lima beans, but she never eats them. Why? Because the other kids in her school don't like them. And Camilla Cream is very, very worried about what other people think of her. In fact, she's so worried that she she breaks out in a bad case of stripes!
After reading A Bad Case of the Stripes the students were asked to complete a story map, identifying the main characters, setting, problem and solution.
We also read "Dog Breath: The Horrible Trouble with Hally Tosis" by Dav Pilkey. Hally Tosis is a very good dog, but she has a big problem. She is the dog with the worst breath in the world! This was a great book for identifying a clear problem and solution.
Writing Workshop
In handwriting we worked on the letters "G" and "Q."

Writing Workshop
The students loved the book Freckle Juice so much that they wrote the next chapter of the story. They will be sharing their chapters with the class next week during Author's Chair.
HandwritingIn handwriting we worked on the letters "G" and "Q."
In preparation of triple digit addtition we spent a lot of time this week practicing how and why we regroup. The students focused on regroupinng to write numbers as sums of ones, tens, and hundreds in different ways.
We began our subtraction mad minutes this week and also played "Soldier Salute" to practice our math facts.
Science
We reviewed how sound is the result of vibration. By extending a ruler over the edge of a desk and pulling down on the ruler, the students were able to observe the different "pitches" that the ruler made. We were able to measure the highness and lowness of sound according to how far out the ruler was extended. The length of the ruler determines the "pitch" of the sound. High and low sounds depend on how fast an object vibrates. When the ruler was vibrating faster, we heard a high sound. A longer ruler makes a lower sound and a shorter ruler makes a higher sound.
The students also watched the video "A First Look at Sound," this week. Prior to watching the video, the students read ten statements and had to decide whether they agreed or disagreed with the statement. Then as we watched the video, the students listened to see if the
statements were true or false. If the statements were false, we had to change the statement to make it true in the “Prove It” box.
Art

In Art the students created an "Owl Moon" painting and silhouette inspired by Jane Yolen’s Owl Moon book. This quiet, simple story filled with descriptive language and metaphors. The watercolor illustrations allude to the stillness of a winter’s night and the magical feeling a child gets when going on a special adventure for the first time. We watched the video version of the book as an introduction for the lesson. The video can be viewed by clicking on the following link:
Afterwards, the students created a "value" landscape using acrylic paint. Value is going from light to dark with any colour. If you add white to a color you get a lighter colour which is called Tint. Artists add value to an object to make it look 3-dimensional on a 2-dimensional surface. The students painted their moon first in white and then gradually added darker shades of blue in a circular motion, being careful to blend the paint as they went along. Finally the students added a silhouette of a tree and an owl to complete their composition.
PE
The loved spending the week trying to "beat" the Mission Impossible maze set up in the gym.
