We had yet another busy, but productive week in 3A.
We enjoyed celebrating our Star Student the week.
Remembrance Day Ceremony
On Friday we had the opportunity to celebrate and remember all of those people who have served our country and our community. The students looked great dressed in their best clothes to participate in our Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday.
May we all take time to think about the soldiers that fought for our freedom and those that paid the ultimate price. Lest we forget!
This week I read "A Poppy is to Remember" by Heather Patterson. It's a great book about how the red poppy became Canada's symbol of honouring those who fought for our freedom on Remembrance Day.
We also read "A Bear in War" written by Stephanie Innes. This picture book is a true story about Teddy’s remarkable journey from his life in East Farnham, Que., through his voyage overseas and his eventual journey home. This book id more than one family's testament to a brave soldier. It is a gentle introduction to honouring those who have died serving their countries in war.
The students loved "A Bear in War" so much that we had to read "Bear on the Homefront" as well. In Bear on the Homefront, Teddy helps English guest children travel to host families on the Canadian home front during the Second World War. When two homesick children need a friend, Teddy bravely leaves his beloved Aileen to comfort them.
Teddy is now on display at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, Ontario.

We also finished reading Freckle Juice this week. After completing the book we discussed the difference between a "fact" and an "opinion." A fact is a statement that is true and can be proven. In other words, a fact is true and correct no matter what. An opinion, however, is a statement that tells how someone feels. An opinion is not always true and cannot be proven. The students were asked to apply their knowledge to identify if statements about Freckle Juice were "fact" or "opinion."
The students were also asked to work with a partner to identify the lesson learned in the book.

I'm so proud of the students for working so hard on their home reading. We had so many students flying to the next destination this week!
Writing Workshop

This week we read "The Peace Book" by Todd Parr. The Peace Book sends a positive and hopeful message about the importance of friendship, caring, and acceptance.
This book was the inspiration of our "Peace Is" writing activity. The students were asked to explain what peace means to them. They wrote three sentences about peace and illustrated one of the sentences. These pages will be complied into a "Peace Is" class book.
Math
We continued to focus on "Differences of 10 and of 100" this week. The students also wrote a quiz to assess their knowledge of the last 4 lessons. A new goal for the week was to work on regrouping to write numbers as sums of ones and tens.

The students also played a game called "9 Lives" to practice their plus 9 math facts.

Science
We started our Hearing and Sound Unit in science this week. I began the unit by reading the story "The Listening Walk." This is a story about a father and child that take a walk together and listen to the sounds around them. Following, our class went on our own listening walk to identify the sounds we hear inside the school, as well as outside.

The students will be creating another lapbook to summarize what they learn throughout the unit.

We discussed how sound is the result of vibration.

We also learned about how the human ear senses vibrations. The students discovered that the ear has three main parts: The Outer Ear, The Middle Ear and the Inner Ear. We hear sounds with our ears. Vibrations move rapidly through the air towards our ears and make part of the human ear vibrate.

Art
We enjoyed the book "A Poppy Is to Remember" so much that it became the inspiration for our art project this week. Our class created "Mixed Media Poppies" to hang in the gym for our Remembrance Day ceremony.
PE
The focus in PE this week was throwing and catching literacy stations.

A hot dog lunch was a great way to end the week!
