I can't believe that December is already here! We are very busy with the holiday season upon us. The Grade 3 Christmas concert is being held on Monday Dec. 3rd with performances at 1:10pm and 6:30pm.
Please remember to send in your Devon Christmas Elves' donations. The last day for donating food items is Thursday, December 6th. This is the day the grade 3 students will be delivering the food to the depot. Permission for your child to participate is now available on PowerSchool. Thank you for your support!
3A Star Student
We enjoyed learning more about our Star Student this week.
She also celebrated our birthday and she brought in treats to share with the class.
Student of the Week
Congratulations to our Student of the Week.
We also celebrated another friend who had his birthday on the weekend.
Special Guest
We had the pleasure of having Elder "Kokom" Florence visit us during assembly on Friday. She is the grandmother, or "Kokom" to one of our 3A friends. We loved hearing her stories and having her speak to us about "generosity."
Writing Workshop
The students continue to enjoy their "free write" time on Monday mornings. Many of the students are writing stories, while some prefer to write personal narratives.
The students completed the good copies of their opinion writing piece about which animal would make the best pet - cats or dogs? We used Art Hub for Kids to guide the students in their illustrations to go along with their writing.
Word Study
This week the focus for our spelling was the Long a pattern using "ai" and "ay."
Reading Workshop
This week we read from our Collections book series. We continued to focus on fluency by reading with expression.
Math
This week we really spent a lot of time practicing triple digit addition with regrouping. The students played games and used Mathletics to work on this skill.
Science
This week the students had fun working through seven Hearing and Sound centers. The students are recognizing that pitch is the result of differences in the rate of vibration. The quicker the vibration, the higher the pitch and vice versa. They also had the opportunity to demonstrate a variety of ways to produce a sound.
The students also learned that instruments can be categorized into 3 families: wind, string and percussion instruments. They were asked to cut and sort a variety of instruments and glue the pictures into the appropriate instrument family categories.
The students enjoyed drawing pictures of their favourite sounds for their lapbooks.
We discussed the reason why sound travels best through solids. The distances between molecules in solids are very small, i.e., solids are more dense - as compared to liquids and gases. Because they are so close, than can collide very quickly, i.e. it takes less time for a molecule of the solid to 'bump' into its neighbours. Solids are packed together tighter than liquids and gases, therefore sound travels fastest in solids. The distances in liquids are shorter than in gases, but longer than in solids. Liquids are more dense than gases, but less dense than solids, so sound travels 2nd fast in liquids. Gases are the slowest because they are the least dense: the molecules in gases are very far apart, compared with solids and liquids.
We finished our lapbooks by discussing pleasant vs. unpleasant sounds.
Art
Our objective in art this week was to create some sort of "star" art to hang up in the gym for our Christmas concert. The students enjoyed creating their five point star Santa ornaments. Please be sure to take a look on Monday when you come for the Christmas concert.
