We had such a great start to December. On Monday the students enjoyed performing in the Grade 3/4 Christmas Concert. Everyone looked so nice dressed up in their holiday best. Congratulations to the students for singing so beautifully.
Devon Christmas Elves
On Thursday the students delivered over 2000 donated food items to the Devon Christmas Elves depot. The students really enjoyed going to the depot and sorting the food into the appropriate categories. They felt proud to be able to contribute to our community in this way. Taking part in this charity helped the students to realize how blessed we are to be grateful for what we have.
I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to our RBES community and especially to all of our 3A parents who were able to donate to the Devon Christmas Elves. We are so blessed to have such a great parent group who are so giving and supportive. Thank you, thank you!
Elf on the Shelf
The students were so excited to find out that Santa had sent an Elf on the Shelf to our classroom. The students enjoyed brainstorming possible names and then taking it to a vote. I am happy to introduce our classroom Elf on the Shelf - Candy Cane!
Candy Cane arrived with a letter explaining to the students that he needs their help to spread kindness and cheer this holiday season. Each day he has been leaving notes with suggested "acts of kindness" that he would like the students to do. Some of the notes have asked the students to "show kindness by using nice manners" or "show kindness by playing with someone new today."
Each morning the students are so excited to write in their Elf on the Shelf Morning Report. In the report they document what Candy Cane has been doing and what the kindness note says that he left behind.
We used Art of Kids Hub to learn how to draw our elf.
Writing Workshop
The students also wrote the rough, as well as, the good copies of their letters to Santa this week. We mailed them to the North Pole and are anxiously awaiting Santa's response.
Congratulations to our Amazing Race flyers this week!
Reading Workshop
The students started working on their December Reading Comprehension journals. This journal includes one page stories to help the students with their fluency, comprehension and building reading confidence. Each story provides the students with a genuine opportunity to practice reading short stories and answering questions to test their comprehension. The students are working through these comprehension checks on an individual basis. Their goal is to complete the journal before Christmas break.
Math
This week we began our subtraction unit. The students practiced subtracting two- and three-digit numbers without regrouping using expanded form, ones and tens tables, and base ten models. We also began subtracting two-digit numbers by regrouping 1 tens block as 10 ones blocks, using base ten sketches and the standard algorithm.
To keep the students thinking about whether they need to regroup or not suggested that the students circle the biggest number in the ones column. Then they need to think about "if there is more on the top, no need to stop" and they can continue to subtract as usual. However "if their is more on the floor, they need to go next door and get 10 more." Finally, "if numbers are the same, zero is the game."

Science
Have a great week everyone!

Science
The students did an amazing job of designing and creating their musical instruments. They loved presenting to the class and demonstrating how to change the volume and pitch on their instruments.
The students had a great time practicing and playing their instruments in the orchestra!
We also celebrated one of our friends birthdays this week.
