December 10 - 14

Only one more week left of school before Christmas vacation. The students have been working hard in class, but they are definitely looking forward to the break.

The students were very festive looking in their Christmas spirit wear on Friday.

3A Star

We enjoyed celebrating our 3A Star this week!

Curricular Update

Writing Workshop

The students rush into the classroom every morning to see what Candy Cane has been up to. They continue to enjoy writing about our Elf on the Shelf in their morning report.

Journal Writing

The students continue to enjoy having the opportunity to "free write" during journal time every Monday.

Reading Workshop

This week we read the "Polar Express" written and illustrated by Carl Van Allsburg. This wonderful book tells the story of a little boy who travels to the North Pole and is given the first gift of Christmas by Santa.

I used this book as a mentor text to discuss the elements of a story by having the students fill in a story map. A story map is a strategy that uses a graphic organizer to help students learn the elements of a book or story. By identifying story characters, setting, problem and solution, students read carefully to learn the details and increase their comprehension.

The students really enjoyed learning new dictionary skills by looking up and recording the definitions of specific vocabulary words from The Polar Express.

Reader's Theatre

We began practicing our Polar Express readers theatre. The students will perform it next week to various classes in the school

Making Words

The students enjoyed our "Making Words" activity this week. They had fun trying to figure out the secret word which was "Snowflakes!"

This week we worked on the letters C in handwriting.

Congratulations to the students who flew to the next destination in our Amazing Race reading challenge!

Math

This week the student continued to practice double digit subtraction with regrouping. Once they felt comfortable they progressed to triple digit subtraction with regrouping.

Science

We completed our Hearing and Sound unit this week. The students demonstrated their knowledge of the curricular outcome by writing a unit test. The marks are now available on PowerSchool for viewing.

Social Studies

In social studies, we began our unit on India. The students had a great time filling in and colouring their Canadian passports.

We also coloured the flag of India on the front cover of our Travel Journal. We discussed what the symbol and represent. The National flag of India is a horizontal tri-color of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion.  In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which represents the chakra.  The deep saffron represents courage and sacrifice, the white represents peace and truth and the green represents faith and chivalry.  The Chakra signifies the spreading of spiritual blessings and well being.

The students were so excited to do a bit of exploring through our Social Studies textbook. Many of the kids had never heard of a textbook! So they thought it was fun to "kick it old school!"

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
