February 25 - March 1

Things never seem to slow down in 3A. We had a busy week with the Bridge Building Workshop and celebrating Pink Shirt Day.

Star Student

We really enjoyed learning more about our Star Student this week.

The students love getting the dirt on our Star Student from their parents(s). We love our parent visits!

Pink Shirt Day

On Wednesday, February 27th, schools from across Canada wore pink to support bully prevention awareness, education and programs.

This years Pink Shirt Day theme was centered around making an effort to “CHOOSE KINDNESS” as a way to support bullying prevention programs in schools and our community.

We spent the day participating in activities that focused on KINDNESS.

I read a variety of wonderful stories to the class about Bullies, Bystanders, and Being Kind. I encourage you to talk to your child about the lessons learned from these books.

Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns about Bullies by Howard Binkow encourages kids to speak up and confide in a trusted adult if they are being picked on or bullied.

The Invisible Boy by Tracy Ludwig is a charming story that inspires any reader who has ever felt invisible.

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by David Catrow is a book that sensitively addresses the needs of quieter children and reminds readers how small acts of kindness can help other children to feel included.

How Full Is Your Bucket - For Kids written by Tom Rath is a great book about boy who learns a valuable “bucket filling” metaphor and watches it come to life as the day unfolds.

Jungle Bullies by Steven Kroll is a great book that teaches us that together we can stand up to bullies, even if they are bigger than us.

We wrote Kindness Acrostic Poems to focus on positive character traits and ways to show kindness, caring, respect, and friendship.

The students enjoyed designing pink shirts with their own kindness messages on them.

We had fun guessing the covered words of a "Kindness" poem.

The students also had a lot of fun making friendship bracelets for each other.

Writing Workshop

The students continue to focus on paragraph structure and conventions during journal writing.

Word Study

The mystery word for our "making words" activity was very fitting this week:

FROSTBITE

Back and Forth

Please remember to reply to your child's Back and Forth journal entry.

Math

This week in math we focused on using arrays to show multiplication concepts.  Students can more readily develop an understanding of multiplication if they see visual representations of the concepts.  For example, they can picture students in a marching band in equal rows or chairs set up in rows in an auditorium.  These arrangements all have something in common.  They are all in rows and columns.  An arrangement of objects, pictures or numbers in columns or rows is called an array.  Arrays are useful representations of multiplication concepts.

This array has 4 rows with 3 stars in each row.  This is referred to as a 4 x 3 array.  This 4 x 3 array has 12 stars in it, or 4 x 3 = 12

Building Bridges with Mr. Caron

The students really enjoyed their Building Bridges Workshop with Mr. Caron. They had the opportunity to assembly four bridge types which included th e arch, beam, cantilever and suspension bridges. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who helped out with the workshop!

In science we continued to focus on testing the strength of different joiners. Their second challenge involved making cubes with toothpicks and using marshmallows, puffed wheat and plasticine as connectors. The students concluded that cubes joined with plasticine where stronger and held more mass that those made with marshmallows or puffed wheat cereal.

PE

The focus for PE this week was building our soccer skills.

Art

As an introduction to "Building Bridges," the students completed a silhouette art project. After learning about the different bridge types, the students drew their favourite bridge and then went over it with a sharpie. Then that finished the background using watercolour paints.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
