March 4 - 8

We had a perfect start to our week by learning more about our Star Student.

We enjoyed having a special guest visit the classroom. Our Star Student brought in Tim Pickell Peanut, the Red Bellied Newt, for us to meet.

The students continue to work hard in class every week.

CURRICULAR UPDATE

Writing Workshop

This week the students wrote their third All About Me paragraph about Pets. After editing their writing for punctuation and grammar, the students typed their paragraphs on the chrome books.

Then they used Art Hub for Kids to guide their illustrations.

My Lucky Day - Narrative Writing Project

With St. Patrick's Day coming up I decided to have the student's write a personal narrative story entitled "My Lucky Day." A narrative is a piece of writing that gives details about a fictional event or an event that has happened in our own life.

Using "The Luckiest St. Patrick's Day Ever," by Teddy Slater as a mentor test, I asked the students to think about all of the things that could happen that would make them feel lucky. Or they could think back to a day that they considered to be their luckiest.

The students wrote down all of the different ideas for their luckiest day on a graphic organizer.

Next week we will begin our writing.

Reading Workshop

Month of Munsch

This week we began our Robert Munsch author study. Robert Munsch has published over 50 books in his career. Long before he started writing books, Robert Munsch was a storyteller. The first time he told his stories to a group of children was in 1972, when he was a student teacher at their nursery school. The children liked his stories, so he started telling them more often. He would often take the same story and tell it again and again, changing it a little bit each time, until it got to be really good. Kids liked how loud and animated he was while he told them stories, so he kept doing that, too. This would become his signature storytelling style.

To begin our author study we collectively read the story "Jonathan Cleaned Up - Then He Heard A Sound."

After reading the story, the students were asked to make up a story on the spot just like Robert Munsch does. The students really enjoyed "thinking on the spot" and sharing their story with the class.

Each day we will be reading one of Robert Munsch's stories and completing an activity to reinforce our comprehension of the story.

The next Robert Munsch story that we read was "Mmm, Cookies!"

The students were then asked to put six sentences from the story in the proper sequence. When we sequence a story we are putting the sentences in order.

We also enjoyed reading "Alligator Baby" and completing a graphic organizer to retell the story.

Handwriting

We are really focusing on finishing our handwriting letters. This week we worked on the letters R, S, and H.

Word Study

The students did a great job of making words out of the mystery word "temperature.|

Math

This week our focus was on Patterns in Multiplication of Even and Odd Numbers. We worked on the following outcomes:

  • finding patterns in the multiplication and practicing multiplication facts for even numbers, particularly for 2, 4, and 6.
  • practicing multiplying numbers in vertical format.
  • finding patterns in the multiplication and practicing multiplication facts for odd numbers, particularly for multiples of 3 and 7.
Science

The students did an amazing job of presenting their bridges to the class.  They were so excited to use their bridges to get off the island!  I'm proud to report that everyone made it to safety!  Great work! The bridge assignments were marked and are now on PowerSchool.

Social Studies

We began our study of Tunisia this week as well. The students will be filling out their travel journal each day as if they are actually in Tunisia. We started out by learning that Tunisia is found on the continent of Africa and discussing the elements of the flag.

After reading about Tunisia each day the students will summarize their three favourite things that they learned in their travel journal.

 PE

This week we worked on our basketball skills. We also had the opportunity to go snowshoeing on Thursday. Thanks to Mr. Coffin for explaining the history of the snowshoe and for helping us to get our gear on.

Art

We started an African Animal Silhouette art project on Friday. We didn't have an opportunity to complete them. I'm not going to post any pictures because I want them to be a surprise for when you visit the school for Student Led Conferences on Wednesday.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
