March 11 - 15th

We kicked off the week in 3A by celebrating our Star Student. Thank you to our friend for sharing his poster and special items with the class!

One of our favourite parts of the week is always when parents come in to share their special letter with the Star Student.

Student Led Conferences

Thank you for those of  you who shared in your child's celebration of learning on Wednesday night. It was so wonderful to see the students taking the lead and eagerly demonstrating their knowledge and skills.

We had five learning centers set up in the classroom that included:

St. Patrick's Day 5 in a Row - Multiplication Game
Catch the Array - Multiplication Game
Making Words - Secret Word "Leprechaun"
Writing Workshop - Sharing "My Lucky Day" Writing
Tunisia Travel Journal - Writing a Journal Entry

Curriculum Update

Writing Workshop

Before continuing with our Lucky Day narrative writing this week, I read another mentor text entitled "My Lucky Day" by Keiko Kasza.

When a delicious-looking piglet knocks on Mr. Fox's door "accidentally," the fox can hardly believe his good luck. It's not every day that dinner just shows up on your doorstep. It must be his lucky day! Or is it? In this story the author keeps readers guessing until the surprise ending when they'll realize it was piglet's lucky day all along.

After reading the story, the students reviewed the ideas from their luckiest day graphic organizer. They chose one of their ideas to use as the focus of their Lucky Day personal narrative. The students were asked to think about and "visualize" what would happen on that day. Visualizing the actions of their story helped the students to start organizing their ideas before writing. They recorded these ideas on a story planner.

The students took their story planners and ideas for their luckiest day wrote their "My Lucky Day" narratives. Their narratives were to include the following elements:
  • Title
  • Lead/introduction sentence
  • Beginning, middle & end
  • Transition words or phrases
  • Actions, thoughts, and feelings
  • Strong conclusion
  • Capitalization & punctuation

Next week the students will type and illustrated their "Lucky Day" narratives.

Reading Workshop

We continued our Month of Munsch by reading "I'm So Embarassed."

Using "I'm So Embarassed" as a mentor text, the students were asked to identify a "text to self" connection.

St. Patrick's Day Reading Comprehension

The students were asked to read a St. Patrick's Day passage and answer comprehension questions based on the reading.

Handwriting

We continued to work on our handwriting this week.

Math

We finished our multiplication unit in math this week. The students also learned a new multiplication game called "Penguin Multiplication."

Social Studies

We learned a lot about this week by reading about traditions, celebrations, environment, goods and services in Tunisia. The students wrote in their travel journals each day after learning about each of these specific topics.

Art

This week the students finished their Tunisia Animal Silhouette art project.

PE

The Alberta Lacrosse Association came in this week to lead a 30 minute session for our students. The kids absolutely loved it.

RBES students are very fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in the SoundKreations RAGA Revolution Dance Residency program. Our instructor, Leo, has been teaching the students Hip-Hop/Latin Fusion dancing and they are having a great time. There will be a school performance on Wednesday, March 20 from 1:45 - 2:45 pm that everyone is welcome to attend.

The students enjoyed dressing in green to celebrate an early St. Patrick's Day.
