June 17 - 21

It's hard to believe that summer vacation is almost here. The students were very busy this week wrapping up projects and completing curricular units. But of course there was time set aside to have some fun!

Ukrainian Village

We had a great field trip to the Ukrainian Cultural Village this week. The students had fun experiencing the lifestyle of Alberta's Ukrainian pioneers. We participated in a variety of hands-on activities such as butter churning, ice cream making, cow milking, grain grinding, paper doll making, feather stripping, pyrohy pinching, and doing laundry. The students also enjoyed Ukrainian dancing, playing games, and having their name written in Ukrainian. Thank you so much to the wonderful volunteers who joined us on our trip.

National Indigenous Peoples Day

On Wednesday our entire school had the opportunity to attend the Indigenous Cultural Showcase at the Edmonton International Airport. We loved watching many Indigenous dances such as the Tradition, Fancy, Grass, Fancy Shawl, and Red River Jig. The students were so excited to to watch one of our fellow classmates perform in the showcase.

We loved having Kairo's mom come to our classroom this week to read "Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest" by Gerald McDermott.

Curricular Update

Writing Workshop

During Writer's Workshop this week the students worked on page for their memory album listing their "Top 10 Favourite Memories" and "10 Things I Learned" this year.

They also continued to type and illustrate the title page of their Fractured Fairy Tales. The students are so proud of their stories and they can't wait to share them with you.

The students had some time this week to work on digital scrapbook pages for their memory albums.

Math

They also completed the Data Anlysis unit this week.  This unit is project based where the students planned their year end party by analyzing and charting the data taken from each other. The students collected first-hand data regarding preferred snacks and drinks for the party.  Using the data collected they organized it using tally arks, line plots and bar graphs.

The four questions they will be collecting data to answer are:
1.  What type of chips would you like for the party?
2. What kind of drink would you like for the party?
3. What type of candy would you like for the party?
4. What kind of popcorn topping would you like on your popcorn?

The top choices were salt n' vinegar chips, cheddar sun ships, cream soda floats, Hi Chews and Chicago mix popcorn.

Social Studies

The students finished their study of Peru this week by focusing on history, nature, government and economy. On Friday we celebrated Peru Day. I would like to send a huge thank you to Mrs. Ott for preparing the traditional Peruvian food and for her presentation to the class.

We had a great time making Peruvian friendship bracelets out of embroidery thread.
