Thursday was a fun day full of Halloween activities. We started the day off with a group picture and then went to the gym for the parade of costumes.
The students also participated in a Halloween STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) challenge to create a Creature Catcher. Working against a criteria & constraints list in partners, the students designed a device to catch as many "creatures" as they could over a given area. The students were given 4 meters of yarn, 4 pipe cleaners, and scissors. The creature catcher could not be any larger than an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper. Then they were given 30 minutes to plan and design their catcher. The catchers were tested to determine their effectiveness and then the students were asked to analyse their design based on the number of creatures it caught. This open ended activity required critical thinking and problem-solving, not to mention that it was SO fun!
Halloween Party
In the afternoon the students chose to attend one of the three Halloween activities.
Hotel Transylvania 3 with Mrs. Tewitz
Halloween Crafts with Mrs. Spreen
Board Games with Mrs. Rothfos
Thank you so much to the parents who supplied food for our Halloween party. It was delicious!
The students also appreciated the special treats given out by their friends!
Writing Workshop
Haunted House For Sale
The students were guided through the process of creating a haunted house art project. They created a "value" landscape using acrylic paint. Value is going from light to dark with any colour. If you add white to a color you get a lighter colour which is called Tint. Artists add value to an object to make it look 3-dimensional on a 2-dimensional surface. The students painted their moon first in white and then gradually added darker shades of blue or purple in a circular motion, being careful to blend the paint as they went along. Then the students added a silhouette of a haunted house and cut out yellow pieces for the windows and doors. As a final touch the students added bats to the background. These art projects turned out amazing!
Using their picture and organizers as a guide, the students completed the planning web and then wrote a "For Sale" ad for their house using descriptive vocabulary words. The students were so engaged and thoroughly enjoyed this writing project.
They typed their ads up and added a picture of a haunted house.
The students had a great time illustrating a picture and writing about what I should be for Halloween. They came up with some pretty creative ideas!
With all of the Halloween excitement on Thursday, we forgot to draw for the Laser City passes as part of our home reading program. So I brought the draw box home and my dog Lily helped to pick the winner!
Math
We covered the following outcomes in math this week:
- writing numbers for words up to 10,000
- identify the place value of digits in two-, three-, and
four-digit numbers.
- practice representing numbers up to 10 000 with base
ten blocks
Science
We wrapped up the Waste and our World unit in science this week by discussing packaging. Packaging refers to all of the material that are used to protect the product until we purchase it and bring it home. We looked at three different brands of chips, and compared the packaging. We talked about the purpose of each type of packaging, why the manufacturer uses this packaging, how we dispose of the packaging and what raw materials were used.
