Happy New Year to all of my students and their families! I can't believe how quickly the last 4 months have gone. I'm looking forward to a wonderful new year of laughing and learning with your child!
Curriculum Update for the Week of January 4 - 8th
Language Arts
To kick off the New Year we read a great story called "Squirrel's New Year's Resolution" by Pat Miller. Squirrel doesn’t know what a resolution is, but happily Bear the librarian explains it quite well, both to her and to the book’s audience. Squirrel then visits her forest friends to see what resolutions they have planned and hopes she’ll be able to think of one for herself. This mentor text inspired the class to make their own New Year's Resolutions and Goals for 2016.
During Reading Workshop the students are working on setting new reading goals for the New Year.

Math
We spent the remainder of the week reviewing 3-digit addition with and without regrouping. Next week we will begin 2- and 3- digit subtraction.
Science
This week the students enjoyed working through seven Hearing and Sound centers. The students are recognizing that pitch is the result of differences in the rate of vibration. The quicker the vibration, the higher the pitch and vice versa. They also had the opportunity to demonstrate a variety of ways to produce a sound.
The class is very excited to build their instruments and bring them in next Friday, January 15th. Please remember that their instruments or "sound-producing devices" should demonstrate methods for controlling the loudness, pitch and quality of sound.
Social Studies
We are nearing the end of our India unit in Social Studies. This week we continued learning about the four regions of India. We also focused on Goods and Services in India. Next Friday we will be celebrating our India Culture day.
Student of the Week
Congratulations to Miss K for being chosen as the Student of the Week during assembly. She is a kind hearted student who is always willing to help out. Keep up the great work!
The students seem to be enjoying the new furniture in the library purchased with the innovation grant received by Mrs. Webb.
