April 18 - 22

Congratulations to Miss S for being our VIP this week. We really enjoyed getting to know you better!

Language Arts

For the next few weeks we will be focusing on "expository texts" during our Writer's Workshop.  Expository, or non-fiction, text is factual writing for the purpose of informing others.  This week we started our "Diary of an Animal" research project.  The students were given a list of animals to chose from for their research project.  In partners, the students are being asked to investigate the life and characteristics of their chosen animal.  Using the computers and library books, the students are gaining confidence in their research skills and ability to make jot notes.

Next week the class will use this information to write a number of diary entries from the point of view of their chosen animal -  just as our mentor texts (Diary of a Worm, Diary of a Fly and Diary of a Spider) are written.

Math

This week we continued working on our measurement unit. The following goals were covered:

  • estimate and measure perimeters using standard and non-standard units.
  • measure perimeter of given and self-created shapes.
  • estimate and measure perimeters of given and self-created shapes in standard units, predicting the perimeter of figures in growing patterns.
Social Studies

The students are continuing to learn about Ukraine by reading through the text and taking jot notes. These notes will help the students to create their presentations in Google Slides.

Science

To acknowledge "earth day" the students helped out by picking up garbage around the school yard with 3B!

Mind Up

This week 3D welcomed Mrs. Kehoe into our classroom to teach the first three modules of the Mind Up program. This is a program where students learn to self-regulate behaviour and mindfully engage in focused concentration required for academic success.

The students really enjoyed participating in activities that taught them to be more self aware and "mindful."

Happy Birthday to these two who celebrated their special days this week.
