April 30 - May 4

Very Important Person

We really enjoyed celebrating our funny and witty VIP this week.

Education Week

The students participated in many great activities to celebrate Education Week at RBES. We kicked the week off with a Pancake Breakfast and PJ Day on Monday. Thank you to everyone who helped make and serve the wonderful breakfast.

It was a pleasure having a visitor from the Devon Lions Club read to our class and present us with a book for our classroom library. Thank you to the Devon Lion’s Club!

Hats On For Mental Health

On Wednesday May 2nd, the students were invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health.

The students participated in one of five different theme packages for our "Wellness" afternoon on Wednesday. For the most part, the students were able to choose which sessions they wanted to attend. The themes included:
  • Nature Lovers (Smoothies in the Sun, Andy Goldsworthy Art and Outdoor Scavenger Hunt)
  • Express Yourself (SeeSaw Activity, Drumfit and Michelangelo Art)
  • Friendship (Board Game Time, Cooperative Games and Collaborative Art)
  • Creative and Calm (Mindful Centers, Mindful Movement and Kimochis)
  • Nutrition (Online - How to Build a Healthy Lunch, Healthy Snack Making and Mindful Eating)
A few of the 3A students joined myself and Mrs. Forchuk to make some yummy fruit kabobs and dip.

Celtic Traditions Performance

On Thursday morning the students enjoyed a performance by Kiérah. The multi award-winning Celtic fiddler has created an interactive, educational performance of traditional Celtic music found across Canada. After taking her program to over 200 schools in B.C. and Alberta, students and staff not only love but are inspired by Kiérah’s outstanding performance. She teaches students where the music came from, how we have taken traditional music and created our own very unique styles of playing within Canada – Cape Breton, French Canadian, Metis and West Coast.

Author Visit

Following the Friday Assembly, the Grade Three students got to meet Tammy Sosnowski, author of “Martin Lost His M."

We also had a bit of time this week to do some work as well!

Following is the curricular update for the week:

Reading Workshop

This week we focused on comparing the original Three Little Pigs fairy tale with two fractured stories. Using Venn Diagrams, the students were asked to compare and contrast the Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot and The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark with the original fairy tale.

Writing Workshop

The students practiced writing "friendly" letters this week.

In preparation of story writing, we worked on the appropriate use punctuation in dialogue.

Math

We wrapped up our division unit this week by covering the following goals:

- write two division sentences for each multiplication sentence.
- understand when to use multiplication or division to find missing information.
- use multiplication or division sentences to solve word problems.

The students practiced their division skills by playing a game called "Race to the Moon."

The students completed an assessment to test their division knowledge.

Social Studies

We began our study of Ukraine this week. Thank you to Nathan and his grandparents for providing Ukrainian items for our bulletin board.

The students created their Ukraine title page and we started taking jot notes from the textbook.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
