We enjoyed celebrating our VIP this week. He was a great help in the classroom and it was fun getting to know him better.

Bike Safety
We really appreciated our presentation by public health nurses on the importance of wearing helmets.
You can even drop a raw egg onto the floor and it won't break if it has a helmet on!
The students even got to touch a brain.....well not a real one!
Thank you to the Devon Bicycle Association for coming in to check the student's helmets and adjusting them to ensure a proper fit.
We celebrated two special birthdays in 3A this week.
Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
Here's the curricular update for the week:
Writing Workshop
This week the students began writing their own version of "The Three Little Pigs." They named their stories by filling in blanks for the title "The Three Little ________ and the __________. The began the writing process by planning their character development. They were asked to think of three good characters and one bad character for their new story. I suggested that their characters be based on characters or people they know, animals, or other creatures. The students described each character's personality, what they will build their houses out of, and what they will say instead of “Not by the hairs on my chinny chin chin”, and “I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!” The students are having so much fun and can't wait to work on more of their stories next week.
The students continued to practice punctuating dialogue in their writing.
They also worked together to practice for their spelling tests.
Math
We began our Fractions Unit in Math this week. In this unit, students are introduced to fractions using paper folding. Beginning with unit fractions, the students learned that the denominator in a fraction is the number of equal parts in the whole and the numerator is the number of selected or shaded parts. They learned how to write a fraction for the shaded region in a shape that has been divided into equal parts and they shaded the equal parts for a given fraction
Social Studies
We continued taking "jot notes" from the textbook on the country of Ukraine.
Thank you so much to Nathan's grandpa for writing the students' names in Ukrainian. They loved seeing how the letters were formed and trying to sound their names out.
The students were so excited to work on a top secret art project this week.
Last week the students wrote letters to their moms, explaining why she is so special. These letters were sent to the Devon Massage Therapy & Holistic Centre as part of a Mother's Day contest. I'm happy to say that one of the three letters chosen was written by a student in our class. He was so excited to take home a special gift for his mom to give her on Mother's Day.
I would like to wish all of the wonderful moms a fantastic day on Sunday. Happy Mother's Day to you all!

Congratulations to the two students who received prizes for making it to role model five times.
