May is flying by and June will be here before we know it. So we continue to work hard to cover our curriculum before the end of the year.
Following is an overview of our week:
Literacy
Monday mornings routinely begin with journal writing. I always enjoy reading about the students' weekend.
The students started writing their Fractured Fairy Tales this week. By changing parts of the original story, such as the characters, setting, what the houses
are made of, and dialogue, the students
finished writing their beginnings. They also got a good start on the middle of their fairy tales. The students are focusing on adding details to make their story interesting and using alternatives to the word "said."
We loved hearing the beginnings of our friends fairy tales during Author's Chair. The stories are off to a wonderful start!
The students enjoyed buddy reading during Reading Workshop.
We finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in our reading group this week.
Our friend really loves her books!
Congratulations to our Amazing Race flyers!
Numeracy
This week we continued with our fraction unit. The students used pattern blocks to find the fraction of a bigger pattern block, divided a shape into equal parts in more than one way, shaded the same fractions using different shapes, and named fractions of a set.
The students continued to practice their multiplication facts by playing a partner game with dominoes.
The students are really enjoying our Yogurt Parfait challenge. They are working hard on memorizing their multiplication facts and excited about earning scoops and toppings for the parfait party.
Science
Our "Painted Lady" caterpillars have arrived! As part of our Life Cycle unit in science, the students have the opportunity to witness the life cycle of painted lady butterflies in our classroom! The caterpillars (larvae) arrived on Wednesday. Each day the students will be writing in their butterfly life cycle journals to document the changes that are occurring.
Social Studies
We finished our study of Ukraine by creating a class google presentation. Each student was given a topic and asked to write a paragraph using jot notes taken from the textbook. They were also asked to insert photos about that topic into the google class presentation. On Thursday, each student had the opportunity to present on their given topic to the class.
PE
We had a great time during "Bike Safety" week. Thanks so much to everyone who helped organize the activities and bike courses each day. The students had a great time and learned so much about being safe on their bikes.
