Ukrainian Village
We had a fantastic field trip to the Ukrainian Cultural Village this week. The students really enjoyed being immersed in the Ukrainian Culture. They said it felt like they were in the "olden times!"
The students spent the morning in the Russia school experiencing a "Pioneer Classroom." The teacher welcomed our students into his classroom and provided an immersive 1920's schoolroom experience by giving lessons in grammar, literature, and mathematics.
The students had so much fun during recess. It started off with some calisthenics led by the teacher.
Then the students played some "pom pom pull away" and "cat and mouse."
Girls and boys line up separately and of course ladies first into the school.

In the Ukrainian Orthodox Church the girls sit on the left and the boys sit on the right.
The "Kiev Cake" was pretty yummy as well!
Curricular Update
Literacy
The students continued to write their Fractured Fairy Tales this week. They focused on the problem of their story and building tension to engage the reader.
This week we finished our unit by comparing fractions with the same denominator. The students will write their fractions unit test on Monday.
Science
Our caterpillars are busy eating and getting ready to form their chrysalises. The students continue to write in their Butterfly Life Cycle journals on a daily basis.
We loved getting together with our Grade One buddies to hear the stories they wrote. What a great way to end the week!

After lunch we were taken on a tour of the village by our wonderful guide.

We also got to visit an old farmstead.
A farm isn't complete without......pigs!
The students enjoyed visiting the grocery store. The prices are much lower that what we pay now!
The students even had to spend some time behind bars!
The blacksmith made some shoes for our "horse."
We learned about how the grain elevator works.
The day wouldn't be complete without a horse and buggy ride.
Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers for joining us on the trip.
Ukrainian Lunch
Thank you so much to the wonderful volunteers who came in on Friday to prepare a Ukrainian lunch for the students. They really enjoyed the perogies, Ukrainian sausage and cabbage rolls.
The "Kiev Cake" was pretty yummy as well!
Congratulations to our student of the week!
