April 22 - 26th

I can't believe that April is almost over.  Summer will be here before we know it!

Following is an overview of the week.

Writing Workshop

The students wrote in their journals about their Easter Weekend.

This week we started a new writing project based on the book "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt.

Image result for the day the crayons quit

In this story the main character Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun. The crayons are able to persuade Duncan to use them differently by the end of the story.

After reading the book, the students were asked to choose one of the crayon colours to write a counter argument to from the perspective of Duncan. We started by identifying the each crayon's complaint and requests of Duncan.

Next week the students will generate a list of counter-arguments to include in their response. They will include their response and counter arguments in a letter to the crayons.

Handwriting

We continued to work on our Spring Handwriting Joke Book this week. Here's another riddle:

Why did the letter A like a flower?

Answer: Because a "Bee" comes after it!

Language Notebook

This week we focused on Verb Tenses - Past, Present & Future

Word Study

RAINDROPS was our mystery word for our Making Words activity.

Reading Workshop

This week we read Chapters 4, 5 & 6 of the Mouse and the Motorcycle. The reading response for Chapter 4 - Keith - involved combining simple sentences to form compound sentences. After reading Chapter 5 - Adventure in the Night - he students were asked to identify a few problems that Ralph encountered on his ride and how the problems were solved. Finally we read Chapter 6 - A Peanut Butter Sandwich - and we wrote about what happened at the Beginning, Middle, and End of the Chapter.

Math

We completed our Division Unit in math by writing a unit test. This assessment will be posted on PowerSchool shortly.

The students continue to work on their multiplication facts for our Parfait Challenge. This week the focus was on x3.

Social Studies

We finished our sketch notes on Ukraine this week. Next week the students will be paired up and asked to contribute a paragraph on a given topic to our class google presentation on Ukraine.

PE

The students worked through fitness stations this week in PE.

Art

This week in art we drew Stacked Little Birdies.  Three very simple birds are stacked on each other, with the highest one looking at a pretty flower.  The students are having a great time with the project and will finish it by painting with water colour next week.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
