Star Student
We enjoyed celebrating our Star Student in 3A this week. Thank you to our Star Student's mom for coming in to share a special letter and giving us the inside scoop on our friend.
Writing Workshop
This week we began our Fractured Fairy Tale unit. A fractured fairy tale takes a classic fairy tale or children’s story and adds a twist, changes characters, or makes it more modern. The classic fairy tale that will be the focus of this unit is "The Three Little Pigs."
Then we focused on comparing the original Three Little Pigs fairy tale with two fractured stories. Using a venn diagram and a graphic organizer, the students were asked to compare and contrast the The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark and The Three Ninja Pigs with the original fairy tale.

To start off, we read three versions of the classic fairy tale.

The students were asked to fill in graphic organizers to identify the story's characters, setting, problem and solution.

Next week the students will begin writing their own fractured fairy tale based on The Three Little Pigs.
Language Notebook
In preparation of our upcoming story writing, we focused on Quotation Marks this week.
The students worked in partners to find "dialogue" in our novel "The Mouse and the Motorcycle."
Reading Workshop
We read chapters 10 & 11 in The Mouse and the Motorcyle this week. After reading chapter 10, the students were asked to fill in the blank using compound words from the story.
In response to chapter 11 "The Search" the students were asked to write about how the story would be different if two science teachers had discovered the mouse, rather than a Kindergarten and Grade 3 teacher.
Outcomes covered this week included:
- develop a sense of 1 km and the relationship between kilometres and metres.
- solve problems involving distances in kilometres
The students also enjoyed going outside and measuring the playground using "mixed measurements" of metres with centimetres.
Parfait Party with 3B
The students were so excited to celebrate learning their multiplication facts to 5 with a "Yogurt Parfait Party!"
Science
Our "Painted Lady" caterpillars have arrived! As part of our Life Cycle unit in science, the students have the opportunity to witness the life cycle of painted lady butterflies in our classroom! The caterpillars (larvae) arrived on Wednesday. We voted as a class and decided to name our caterpillars "Flippy #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, and #10.
Each day the students will be writing in their butterfly life cycle journals to document the changes that are occurring.
We also read the book "Sunflower Life Cycle" this week. The students had the opportunity to get together with 3B and plant their very own sunflowers to observe in the classroom.
Social Studies
We completed our study of Ukraine this week. The students presented their slides for the Google class presentation.
