The weather is finally starting to warm up. The students are trying to stay focused, but we may have snuck outside a few times this week for a "secret" recess.
Following is an update of the curriculum covered this week:
Writing Workshop
The students continue to work on the proper formatting of paragraphs and editing during Journal Writing each week.
The students finished typing their letters for the writing project "The Day the Crayon Quit." I gave them a great deal of support for the last persuasive letter they wrote to the Easter Bunny. As well, I modeled my own letter to the Red Crayon to provide an exemplar for the class. Each student was given an adequate amount of time to write, type and edit their letters. Therefore, this project will be used as an assessment and I will not be editing the students work. I've printed off the letters as they turned them in to me. I just wanted to give you a heads up. When the students bring the letters home with the rubric, you will be able to see just exactly what they were able to do on their own. I am so proud of how hard the students worked on this project and how far they have come since September.
All About Me
This week the students wrote and illustrated their 4th All About Me paragraph. These paragraphs will be complied and made into a booklet in June.
Handwriting
So here are two riddles from our Handwriting Joke Book this week:
When do monkeys fall from the sky?
Answer: During Ape-ril showers!
Why didn't the bunny hop?
Answer: No bunny knows!
Novel Study
This week we read Chapter 8 - A Family Reunion and Chapter 9 - Ralph Takes Command of The Mouse and the Motorcycle. The reading response activity for Chapter 8 had the students comparing and contrasting the personality traits of Keith (the boy) and Ralph (the mouse). For Chapter 9 the students were asked to write a "lost" poster for the missing motorcycle.
Math
We continued with our measurement unit this week. The following outcomes were covered:
- estimate measurements in metres.
- compare estimates to measurements made using a metre stick.
- solve problems involving measurements in metres.
- investigate the relationship between centimetres and metres.
- convert measurements in metres and centimetres to only centimetres.
- measure in metres and centimetres.
Social Studies
The students worked in pairs to finish their Ukraine Class Slideshow. We will be presenting as a class on Monday.
PE
The Minute to Win It Challenges were so fun!
Bike Helmet Check
Thank you to the Devon Bike Association for coming to the school on Friday to check the students helmets. If our child brought a helmet to school they were given a blue piece of paper confirming that their helmet was checked for its condition and proper fit.
Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Mother's Day!
