University of Alberta Botanic Gardens Field Trip
The students had a wonderful time on the U of A Botanic Garden field trip. Thank you so much to Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Donofrio, and Rourke's Grandma for volunteering to join the class. It was greatly appreciated!
Wetland Wonders
The students got to take an in-depth look at the pond ecosystems of the garden by using nets to capture a fascinating variety of pond critters. We also learned about frog life cycles and tried their luck at catching some in the wetland areas.
Going Buggy
Math
This week we covered the following outcomes:
Choosing Units - deciding on the most appropriate unit to measure length or distance. The students compared measurements in different units.

Science
Our caterpillars are busy eating and getting ready to form their chrysalises. The students continue to write in their Butterfly Life Cycle journals on a daily basis.
Star Student
We had a great time celebrating our Star Student this week and having a visit from his mom.
We had a great time celebrating our friends birthday this week. Thanks for bringing cookies in to share with the class!

Going Buggy
The students also captured actual insects and learned about their adaptations, feeding, reproduction and life cycles.
We had a great time playing Hares vs. Linx in the maze.
It was fun competing in a relay race to learn about the butterfly life cycle.
The next day the students filled in a page about the field trip for their memory binders.
Bike Day
We had a great day reviewing our hand signals and riding our bikes safely in the school yard.
Writing Workshop
This week the students began writing their own version of "The Three Little Pigs." They named their stories by filling in blanks for the title "The Three Little ________ and the Big Bad __________. The studets began the writing process by planning their character development. They were asked to think of three good characters and one bad character for their new story. I suggested that their characters be based on characters or people they know, animals, or other creatures. The students described each character's personality, what they will build their houses out of, and what they will say instead of “Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin”, and “I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!” The students are having so much fun and can't wait to work on more of their stories next week.
Reading Workshop
We finished or The Mouse and the Motorcycle novel study this week. After reading Chapter 12 - An Errand of Mercy, the students were asked to identify the beginning, middle, and end of the chapter.
For Chapter 13 - A Subject for a Composition, the students were asked to identify lessons learned by both Keith and Ralph.
