Curriculum Update

Writing Workshop

The students started writing their Fractured Fairy Tales this week. By changing parts of the original story, such as the characters, setting, what the houses are made of, and dialogue, the students
finished writing their beginnings. They also got a good start on the middle of their fairy tales. The students are focusing on adding details to make their story interesting and using alternatives to the word "said."

We loved hearing the beginnings of our friends fairy tales during Author's Chair. The stories are off to a wonderful start!

Reading Workshop

As a class, we read Life Cycles by Sean McCollum during Reading Workshop.

We celebrated the completion of our Mouse and the Motorcycle novel study by watching the movie with 3B. What would watching a movie be without popcorn?!

Congratulations to our Amazing Race Flyers!

Math

The following outcomes were covered in math class this week:

Perimeter - Measuring Around a Shape
- finding the perimeter of polygons by counting units and by adding side lengths

Exploring Perimeter
- estimate and measure the perimeter of regular and irregular polygons.
- investigate patterns in perimeters of figures composed of identical shapes and realize that perimeter is not additive.
- construct shapes with given perimeters

We had a great time on our 1km walk with 3B this week.

Science

All of our caterpillars have formed chrysalises. We have them hanging in the classroom habitat and we are anxiously waiting for the butterflies to emerge.

This week we learned more about the life cycle of salmon and the sea turtle.

PE

We had a great time this week doing "Drum Fit" in Phys Ed!

Art

In art this week the students painted their Painted Lady Butterflies using a technique called Pointillism.  This technique involves painting using tiny dots of various colours, which become blended in the viewer's eye.

Star Student

We enjoyed getting to know our Star Student more this week. A big thank you to our friend's mom for coming in to share her poem.

Student of the Week

We always enjoy celebrating our Student of the Week!

Multiples Day was so much fun!
