We spent Thursday morning expanding our reading palates with a "Book Tasting." This was a perfect way for students to nibble on a book and decide if they want to devour the whole thing! When it comes to reading, just like eating, some kids have pickier palates than others. A great way to pique their appetites for a good read is to sample different authors, genres, and series.
We joined up with 4B to make groups, or tables, of 6. The students made reservations for the book tasting and were seated at one of the eight genre tables. The different genre tables included Biography, Fantasy, Fairy Tale, Graphic Novel, Humour, Informational, Realistic Fiction, and Science Fiction.
Once seated at their tables, the students chose a book from the centre of the table to "taste." They were given 5 minutes to dive into the book.
After "tasting" their books, the students rated and talked about their books with their table members.
The students continued to rotate through all 8 tables throughout the morning. At the end of the activity, they were asked to reflect on what they enjoyed about the "Book Tasting." The students had a great time and they especially enjoyed being served cookies and juice as a special treat.
Math
In math the students practiced representing numbers up to 10 000 with base
ten blocks.
They also worked on replacing a number with its expanded form.
Social Studies
In social studies, we began plotting a list of towns and cities on the map of Alberta.
Here are a few reminders:
Congratulations to our first “Student of the Week” for the year!
