November 18 - 22

The students had a great time on Wednesday going on our first field trip to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. With its collection of recycling and composting facilities, the Edmonton Waste Management Centre has been called “the ultimate waste theme park.” The students discovered how waste can be transformed into resources, observed household recyclables being sorted and learned the importance of taking e-waste to the Eco Station. The tour tied in nicely with our Waste and Our World unit in science and our Grade 4 school recycling program.

On Friday afternoon all of the students at RBES participated in our Wellness Afternoon. Students rotated through four different types of sessions - body, mind, food and fun. Everyone had a great time.

Curriculum Update

Our Kidblog writing schedule this week included:

Journal Writing Monday - Weekend Post
Talk About it Tuesday - Favourite Jersey
Week in Review - 3 Things I Learned, 2 Things I Liked, and 1 Question I have

Reading Workshop

This week we began our author study of Chris Van Allsburg. Some of his more famous books include The Polar Express and Jumanji. We started by learning some fun facts about Chris Van Allsburg. Then the students completed the Author Study Survey independently to reflect on their own favorite authors.

The next day we started exploring some of Chris Van Allsburg's books. The students were broken into groups and asked to look at 8 different books. They were given a piece of chart paper, where they wrote down things that they noticed in the books, such as illustrations, plot, characters etc. The students will present their findings on Monday.

Writing Workshop

We began our Biography writing assignment this week using the book "The Frank Show" by David Mackintosh as mentor text.

Frank is your typical grandpa, but no one has a Grandpa like him...
If you had to stand up and talk, for one whole minute, about a member of your family, who would you pick? Everyone else chooses really cool people, like Tom’s Uncle Marlon who plays drums in a band, or Hannah’s mum with her company car. But there’s nothing cool about Grandpa Frank... or is there? In this hilarious, wise and heart-warming story, awesome new picture book talent David Mackintosh shows, with a supreme lightness of touch, just how much the older generation has to teach us, and how much fun learning from them can be.

After reading the book, the students were asked to complete a biography assignment about a grandparent or person who inspires them. We spent some time brainstorming different questions they can ask during their interviews. Your child should have brought these questions home on Wednesday. The students were asked to return these questions on Monday so we can begin the written portion. Everyone seems excited about this project and sharing the information they learn about their interviewee.

Math

We finished up our Place Value unit in Math this week. The students wrote their unit test on Friday. We will begin our Addition and Subtraction unit next week.

Social Studies

In Social Studies started learning about the physical geography of Alberta. The students were briefly introduced to the six different regions.

Then we spent more time specifically focusing on the Canadian Shield, Boreal Forest, Foothills and the Rocky Mountains. We are reading through our notes together and highlighting the important information.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
