Friday, September 27th was our annual Terry Fox Run. It was overcast and cold but the students pushed through. We talked about how walking in the chilly, cold weather helped us to better understand what Terry Fox went through during his Marathon of Hope.

Thanks to everyone who brought in a Toonie for Terry. I'm happy to report that 4A raised $25.00 for cancer research!

Following is an overview of the curriculum covered this week:

Language Arts

Kidblog

On Tuesday the students wrote an opinion paragraph about their favourite season. They enjoyed presenting their arguments to the class. Some students were so convinced by their peers' reasoning, that they considered changing their own opinions!

On Wednesday the students finished their WeSearch project on Terry Fox. They used their research jot notes to compile a paragraph about Terry Fox and why we still participate in the Terry Fox Walk every year.

Word Work

This week I introduced "Making Words" in which the students select letters to build short and long words. They were given nine letters and worked to build as many 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 letter words as possible. Some of the students were even able to come up with the "mystery" word that used all 9 letters! It was "DECOMPOSERS!"

Grammar

This week the students worked through various activities to focus on the difference between common and proper nouns. The students worked through
common noun names any person, place or thing.
proper noun is a name of a specific person place or thing. The first letter of a proper noun is always capitalized.

Math

In math we learned how to use T-Tables to extend number sequences and to solve problems. The students continue to work on their math facts using the Xtra math program

Science

This week we started our unit on Waste and our World. To kick it off, we played a Kahoot game to see what students already know. about waste.

Next, we brainstormed all the things that we think are waste.

The students also worked on KWL charts about Waste in Google Slides. What do you know? What are examples of waste? In Google slides they also added images from the web to accompany their writing.

They also will add questions they have about our unit, and throughout the unit they can come back to this document and add to it.

Using a graphic organizer, students scanned QR Codes to find the link to a PowerKnowledge Life Science website on Recycling in Nature. The students had to read through information to answer four questions about decomposers and recycling in food chains.

We also watched a few great videos - The Dirt on Decomposers and Fabulous Food Chains

PE

We continued with cooperative games and locomotion in PE this week. The students enjoyed playing On The Lines and Touchdown.
