September 30 - October 4

On Monday the students at RBES showed their support for Orange Shirt Day. Orange shirts are worn in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children’s sense of self-esteem and well-being and to remember that "Every Child Matters."

We also enjoyed having guest speaker, Elder Sydney Courtepatte of the Michel Band, come in to share some of the history of the Indigenous People in Canada. The students appreciated learning about traditional indigenous clothing items and how they were made.

Following is a curricular update for the week:

Language Arts

To go along with Orange Shirt Day, the students were asked to write a blog post explaining why they matter.

A few students volunteered to read their paragraph aloud to the class.

After editing their writing, the students copied their paragraphs onto a T-shirt template and coloured them orange.

The "WeSearch Wednesday" assignment was to use an Engaging Students link to research the Methods of Waste Disposal. The students researched 3 different ways that we dispose of waste and wrote a paragraph stating which method was best in their opinion. They were asked to provide 3 arguments to back up their opinion.

"Read to Win"

Congratulations to our first winner of two free games at Laser City as part of our home reading program. At the end of each month we will be drawing one reading log from our draw box. Please encourage your child to read at least 30 minutes each night. For each 30 minutes read, your child can fill in one line on the reading log. The students are able to submit as many logs in one month as they would like.

Grammar

This week we focused on the difference between simple and complex sentences.
A simple sentence has a subject and a predicate. Two simple sentences can be joined with a comma and a conjunction to create a compound sentence. Compound sentences can be joined with the following words: for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so. The students were taught the acronym, FANBOYS to remember the conjunction words.

Math

In math we  used T-tables to solve problems that involve increasing and decreasing sequences. The students continue to use the Xtra Math program to increase their math fact fluency and accuracy.

Science

In science this week we explored why soil is important to life and how the compost life cycle creates quality soil that is good for growing.

I read a book entitled "Wiggling Worms at Work" by Wendy Pfeffer. Crawling through the dirt, worms are hard at work, helping plants to grow. Worms help the fruit and vegetables we eat by loosening the soil and feeding the plants.

The students also watched a few videos:

The Dirt on Dirt
Who Needs Dirt

They were encouraged to think critically and write about one important fact that they learned
from each video.

Once we investigated what makes soil, the students began creating a Compost Life Cycle
poster. The posters will be completed next week.

PE

The students enjoyed working through the locomotion stations in PE.

Art

The students had a great time creating Fall Trees in art this week. They used a method called "blow painting" for the trunk and branches. Later once the base of the tree was dry, the students used acrylic paint to dab fall coloured leaves on the trees. The paintings turned out great and are on display in the hallway for everyone to enjoy.

We also celebrated one of our friend's birthdays on Friday!
