October 2 - 5

We had a busy week in 4A. Following is a quick overview of the activities completed throughout the week:

Writing Workshop

We read the book "Turkey Trouble" by Wendy J. Silvano.

Turkey is in trouble. Bad trouble. The kind of trouble where it's almost Thanksgiving . . . and you're the main course. But Turkey has an idea--what if he doesn't look like a turkey? What if he looks like another animal instead? After many hilarious attempts, Turkey comes up with the perfect disguise to make this Thanksgiving the best ever!

After reading the story, the students were asked to write a friendly letter to Farmer Jake. The letter was to be written from the perspective of the Turkey in the story, trying to  persuade Farmer Jake to try something different for Thanksgiving dinner.

The students had a great time writing the letter and some of their arguments were pretty convincing!

The students completed a turkey art project to go along with their letter. Thanks so much for sending in the leaves for the project!

Math

We moved on to Algebra this week by using symbols to represent unknown numbers in addition and subtraction equations. Students used diagrams to write and solve addition and subtraction equations with unknowns in all positions. They also solved addition and subtraction equations with unknowns in all positions without using diagrams.

For example: 36 + ⃞ = 48 or 86 - ⃞ = 75

Science

The students completed their Composting Life Cycle posters. They were asked to describe each stage of the life cycle in their own words.

We also talked about Reducing Waste by focusing on the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
After watching Plastic Packaging - Behind the News the students completed the graphic organizer to explain each of the three R's.

The students were each given a picture of an item to decide whether it should be reduced, reused, or recycled. The pictures were then place in the appropriate category on the bulletin board.

We also discussed Hazardous Waste and Our Planet this week.

The students conducted an online research project to gain a deeper understanding of how hazardous waste, when disposed of improperly, can hurt our environment, plants, animals and human beings too.

The students used QR codes to visit two different websites to research land and air pollution. Then they were were asked to record their ideas by filling in the 3 Things I learned, 2 Interesting Facts, and 1 Question I Have.
